Who We Are

A community-led movement born in Tombore Village, Nuba Mountains.

{

Our Story

Born from struggle. Built for the people.

The Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan cover roughly 48,000 km² and are home to about 1 to 1.5 million people — predominantly ethnic Nuba, with a smaller Baggara Arab minority. The terrain is rugged, with hills rising 450–900 meters above the plains, and many villages remain remote with limited road access, especially in the rainy season.

Since the outbreak of Sudan's civil war in April 2023, the Nuba Mountains have become a refuge for internally displaced families arriving with extreme need, food insecurity, disrupted schooling and trauma.

Tombore Solidarity Innovation (TSI) was founded in July 2025 by returnees, displaced persons and local leaders who believe that despite years of conflict, marginalisation and displacement, people can rebuild their lives if given the tools, dignity and investment.

We are an independent, non-political and non-religious community-based organisation — guided by humanity, equality and inclusiveness.

  • Financial Controls: Two-person approval for major payments, clear receipts, and regular audits.
  • Community Oversight: Elders, women's groups and youth councils involved in planning and review.
  • MEL Framework: Attendance sheets, short surveys and focus-group chats track progress, with monthly learning meetings.

Our Commitment

Safeguarding & Accountability

Tombore Solidarity Innovation is committed to protecting all community members, especially children, youth, and vulnerable persons. Click each policy below to read the full details.

Our Safeguarding Commitment

Protecting everyone from harm

Tombore Solidarity Innovation (TSI) is committed to protecting every person who comes into contact with our work from harm caused by our staff, volunteers, partners or programmes.

This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, trainers, teachers, contractors, governing body members, visitors and partner organisations, and covers all our programmes: livelihoods, education, peacebuilding and trauma healing, and girl empowerment.

We will prevent harm, respond quickly to every concern, and put people's safety and dignity first.

Zero Tolerance for Exploitation and Abuse

Sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment are never accepted

TSI has zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment (SEAH).

  • No one may ask for sex or any favour in return for aid, materials, training places, jobs or certificates. These services are free and are a right, never a trade.
  • Sexual activity with anyone under 18 is prohibited, regardless of local custom.
  • Staff who see, hear about or suspect exploitation or abuse must report it. Staying silent is itself a breach of this policy.

Code of Conduct

How our staff, volunteers and partners must behave

Everyone working with TSI must treat community members with respect, listen to them, and never use their position for personal benefit.

  • Staff must not use abusive language, threats or violence.
  • Staff must not discriminate based on ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, displacement status or political view.
  • Staff must not accept gifts or favours from participants.
  • Staff must not be alone with a child or vulnerable adult behind closed doors. Activities take place in open, visible places with at least two adults present.

Safe Recruitment

Careful checks before anyone joins our team

TSI treats every role as a safeguarding role. Before anyone joins our team we:

  • Speak to at least two referees, including a former employer, school or respected community leader.
  • Confirm identity through our Community Liaison Officers.
  • Include at least one safeguarding question in every interview.
  • Require every new worker to complete safeguarding induction and sign the Code of Conduct before starting.

Reporting Concerns and Whistleblowing

Safe and confidential ways to speak up

Everyone has a duty to report any concern or suspicion that a person has been harmed, exploited or abused by someone linked to TSI. A concern does not need proof; reporting is not accusing.

  • Reports can be made to a Safeguarding Focal Point, the Executive Director, or through any feedback channel (suggestion box, face-to-face meeting, or phone).
  • Anonymous reports are accepted and reviewed.
  • TSI will not punish anyone who reports in good faith. Retaliation is itself misconduct.

Survivor-Centred Response

Putting the person who experienced harm first

A survivor-centred response puts the safety, rights and wishes of the person who experienced harm at the centre of every decision.

  • First, we make sure the person is safe.
  • Second, we listen without judgement and do not blame.
  • Third, we explain the help that is available and let the person decide.

We never force a survivor to report, tell family or authorities, or repeat their story. Information stays confidential and is shared only with informed consent.

Child Protection

A special duty to keep children safe

Children in the Nuba Mountains have lived through conflict, displacement and loss. TSI accepts a special duty to keep them safe. A child is anyone under 18 years old.

  • We carry out extra checks for every role involving contact with children.
  • We maintain safe learning spaces with good light, clean water and separate latrines.
  • We offer child-friendly reporting routes, including trusted teachers, the Girls' Council and suggestion boxes.
  • We respond quickly and carefully to any disclosure of harm, always acting in the child's best interests.

Safe Programming

Safeguarding built into every activity

Safeguarding is built into how TSI designs and runs activities, not added later.

  • Before any new activity begins, we complete a risk assessment asking who could be harmed, how, and what will prevent it.
  • Classes and trainings take place in visible, accessible places during daylight, with at least two adults present.
  • Activities are designed so women, girls, older people and people with disabilities can take part safely.

Report a Concern

If you have any safeguarding concerns, please reach out immediately. Your report will be handled confidentially and with urgency.

Your Data Matters

Privacy Policy & Data Protection

We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting the personal information you share with us. Click each section below to learn how we handle your data.

Our Privacy Commitment

Respecting and protecting your information

TSI collects information about people in order to run our education, livelihood, peacebuilding and girl empowerment programmes. In a conflict-affected area, a name, an ethnic group, a location or a protection concern can put a person at risk if it reaches the wrong hands.

We collect, use, store, share and destroy personal information in ways that respect dignity and keep people safe. Protecting people always comes before convenience or donor requests.

What Information We Collect

Only what is needed, with a clear purpose

We collect personal information only when it is needed to deliver a service, check that programmes are fair and effective, or meet a donor or legal requirement.

  • Every question on our forms has a clear programme purpose.
  • We collect information directly from the person wherever possible, in private.
  • We do not ask about ethnicity, political views, religion or detailed displacement history unless it is essential and the person has agreed.

Consent

You decide how your information is used

People have the right to decide whether TSI may collect and use their information. Consent must be informed, freely given and specific.

  • We explain aloud, in a language the person understands, what will be collected, why, and who will see it.
  • For those who cannot read, we accept spoken consent witnessed by a second staff member.
  • Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and saying no will never affect access to services.

How We Protect Your Data

Secure storage and careful access

We keep personal information safe from loss, theft, damage and misuse.

  • Paper records are kept in locked cabinets or boxes. Keys are held by named staff.
  • Phones, tablets and laptops used for TSI work are password or fingerprint locked.
  • Access follows the need-to-know rule: staff see only the information required for their role.
  • Data is backed up regularly to protect against power cuts and device failures.

Sharing Information

Only with a clear reason and proper care

We share personal information only when there is a clear reason, a legal or donor requirement, or the person has agreed.

  • Donors and partners usually receive statistics and stories, not names.
  • We never give personal information to anyone outside TSI without approval from the Executive Director, who weighs the risk to the people concerned.
  • All partners who receive personal information sign a data sharing agreement.

Photographs and Stories

Showing dignity, never putting people at risk

Photographs, videos and stories help us explain our work, but they can also expose people to harm.

  • We take or use images and stories only with clear, recorded permission.
  • Stories show people with dignity and as active agents of change, not only as victims.
  • We never share details such as full names, exact locations or family relationships that could expose someone to risk.
  • Images of children need the permission of a parent or caregiver and the child.

Your Rights

You own your personal information

Anyone may ask TSI what information it holds about them, why, and who has seen it. You may also:

  • Ask for mistakes to be corrected.
  • Ask us to stop using your information.
  • Ask for it to be deleted.

We will answer within 30 days. Anyone who believes their information has been mishandled can complain through our feedback channels.

Data Breaches

Acting quickly when information is lost or misused

A data breach happens when personal information is lost, stolen, seen by someone who should not see it, or sent to the wrong person.

  • Staff report any breach within 24 hours, without fear of punishment for honest mistakes.
  • We act quickly to stop further harm, assess who may be at risk, and tell those affected.
  • We record what happened and what will change so it does not happen again.
