Taking Community Voices Beyond Borders: TSI Advances Community Advocacy at Mount Kenya University

Tombore Solidarity Innovation (TSI) continues to expand its advocacy and partnership efforts through university engagements and development forums. At Mount Kenya University, our Director of Partnerships, Jacob Joseph Erishlo, represented TSI by bringing attention to the challenges facing conflict- and displacement-affected communities in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan and highlighting the importance of community-led solutions.

Amplifying Community Voices Through Advocacy

At Tombore Solidarity Innovation (TSI), we believe that meaningful development begins when communities have the opportunity to share their experiences, influence decisions, and participate in shaping solutions to the challenges affecting their lives.

As part of this commitment, TSI continues to use university engagements, fellowship opportunities, and discussion forums to advocate for communities affected by conflict and displacement, particularly in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan.

Our Director of Partnerships, Jacob Joseph Erishlo, recently participated in advocacy and discussion engagements at Mount Kenya University (MKU), where he presented TSI's community-led development vision and highlighted the importance of strengthening support for underserved communities.

Bringing Local Challenges into Wider Conversations

Communities in the Nuba Mountains continue to face significant challenges, including disrupted education, limited livelihood opportunities, displacement, and inadequate access to essential development support.

Through these engagements, TSI seeks to ensure that these realities receive greater attention in conversations involving universities, development organisations, potential donors, and other stakeholders.

Our advocacy focuses on several interconnected priorities:

  • Education: Expanding learning opportunities for children and young people affected by conflict and displacement.

  • Livelihood Development: Supporting women and youth with practical skills and opportunities to improve household income.

  • Girls' Empowerment: Promoting girls' participation, leadership, inclusion, and access to opportunities.

  • Community Leadership: Strengthening local participation in identifying challenges and developing sustainable solutions.

  • Peacebuilding: Encouraging dialogue, social cohesion, and community participation.

These priorities reflect our belief that development programmes should respond to the needs identified by the communities themselves.

Building Partnerships Beyond Borders

For TSI, advocacy is not simply about raising awareness. It is also about building relationships that can translate community priorities into practical action.

University platforms and fellowship discussions provide valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, share experiences, identify potential collaborators, and connect community-led initiatives with wider development networks.

Through the participation of our Director of Partnerships, TSI is working to strengthen these connections and create opportunities for collaboration with academic institutions, NGOs, foundations, donors, and development partners.

We recognise that addressing the challenges facing conflict-affected communities requires cooperation, resources, technical knowledge, and long-term commitment.

Our Commitment to Community-Led Development

TSI remains committed to ensuring that local communities are not only represented in development discussions but are also actively involved in planning, implementing, and monitoring initiatives that affect them.

Our approach is rooted in local leadership, community participation, accountability, and practical solutions.

We believe that people closest to the challenges should have a meaningful role in shaping the solutions. This principle continues to guide our work in the Nuba Mountains and our engagement with partners beyond the region.

We welcome universities, donors, development organisations, foundations, fellowship networks, and individuals who share our commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.
